…let’s talk about it”

Pastor Troy on the right, Lil Nas X on the left

With LGBTQ acts such as Brockhampton, Lil Nas X and Tyler The Creator, it’s still surprising that certain people in the Hip Hop community can’t seem to let go of the homophobia that used to be a common trend in so many hiphop songs and artists.

It’s time for people to recognise that all because hip hop is not quite mainstream, or has a different culture that it appeals to, it is still unacceptable to incite homophobia. An example of this prejudice is Pastor Troy’s recent post of a photo of Lil Nas X at the Grammys. Nas picked up two Grammys that night rocking his pink Versace cowboy outfit.

However, Troy did not see that his success was due to the artist holding the number 1 spot for 17 weeks, breaking records on the billboard top 100, he assumed it was down to the hot pink, western inspired ensemble.

With a damningly intolerant rant, where Troy describes a day at

Why can’t all rappers be ALLIES?

… I mean aren’t we done with homophobes in HipHop?

Applebee’s where two ‘Punks’ were kissing, and how he was relieved when his son also saw this not as a romantic date, but as an act specifically designed to ‘take away masculinity’, a top priority in the manuscript of the homosexual ‘agenda’, Troy practically condemned himself to being a homophobe.

It was a relief to see so many fans and major news platforms describe Pastor Troy as being intolerant, however I was disappointed in still seeing Hip Hop pages such as HipHopDx, describe his comments as ‘seemingly’ homophobic, or ‘perceived anti-gay rhetoric’. There still seems to be a strong reluctance to accept that the HipHop community has an issue with homophobia. Perhaps because they have stopped using the word ‘F*ggot’ in songs as much as they did a decade ago, some people still think it is ok to have these views, that it isn’t homophobia, just, the classic, good old freedom of speech.

And it’s not just the probably jealous Pastor Troy who seems to have these intolerant views. Kanye West has also been supporting well known anti-LGBTQ preachers, some of them that love to compare same sex marriage with incest. He has also met with homophobe Yoweri Museveni , the president of Uganda, gifting him a pair of Kanye’s overpriced shoes.

Uganda does not just impinge rights of LGBTQ people, it strips them away completely, giving life imprisonment to anyway who is gay, and 7 years to anyone who knows of people who are gay, and fails to come forward.

I understand that Kanye is a talented producer and rapper, but he is also a homophobe. Some may argue he isn’t, saying he has never said anything homophobic himself, but I disagree. To support people who are homophobic, is a cowardly way of being homophobic, the same as supporting or greeting a racist leader with a pair of trainers would make you just the littlest bit racist. Intolerance in any community or culture is unacceptable.

I’m sorry if Kanye and Troy’s egos are damaged, but there are just more talented hiphop artists out there who make music, and don’t encourage homophobia. Remember, allies can rap just as well as homophobes.
